About the Artist

I am a full time potter living in the woods of Northern Michigan. After a ten year hiatus of being a vineyard manager I’m back in the pottery studio. Currently I am focusing on cone6 wood soda fired vessels. Living in the middle of a forest, wood seemed an appropriate heat source and soda is offering me some atmospheric depth to my wares.

A man with glasses, a cap, and a gray beard taking a selfie outdoors during autumn. Behind him, there is a wooden structure under construction with a green electrical box and a green shelf. The background features trees with fall foliage and utility poles.

Driven by transformation

My journey has been anything but ordinary. From zero art background, to college dropout, to apprentice, to gallery representation, to Smithsonian award winner, to farmer, to artist; transformation has been integral to my work.

The transformation of clay coils into mugs, bowls, pitchers, and teapots does not happen quickly but allows me a rhythm to create subtle nuance into vessels.
